The Knot of Childhood
The Knot of Childhood is the third in the series of Knot illustrations. This piece has some similarities to the first two in the series (the Creation & Awareness), but begins to deal with the topic of being alive. I’ve always believed that children, especially infants, are able to see beyond what we can see. I think that we lose our ability to see as we grow older. I have vivid recollections from my childhood where my imagination was as real as reality. I’m sure that small children can see angels.
The Knot

The knot is based on five-fold symmetry. The five-fold knot is creates a unique and complex image with a visible pentagram. The pentagram contains within it the golden section and has been associated with mysticism. It is also a symbol of regeneration and growth.
Patterns
The pattern is created from a complex grid including 12-sided and 6-sided grids. The grid is derived after a pattern explained by Paul Marchant in his book “Unity in Pattern.”

Technique
The work is created entirely on the computer using Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom tablet. The effect is created by continuous “Scribbling” and slowly building up layer upon layer of lines, creating the knotted and scribbled texture.

The drawings are created at a very high resolution (300 dpi at full resolution). This allows the image to be worked on at different levels . It also provides interest to the subject, but combining chaotic elements and structure.
Grid
The composition is aligned to a square root phi grid. The grid defines the positions for the major compositional elements, which in this case are aligned to the occult centers and to the golden section. The same grid will be used on future images created.
The grid is based on the square root phi rectangle. The shape of the rectangle is unique in that it contains compositional elements and references which fall along the Golden Section.
