Designer Climbing Gyms

Last winter Rob and I frequented a local gym to get into shape for the climbing season, this year, both local gyms have closed down. I’m hoping maybe this trend will continue, and we’ll have some designer friendly climbing gyms coming our way soon (via core77).

You’ve got to love this—an upscale climbing wall from a gym in Tokyo.

“To express the original brand concept of “becoming beautiful through movement”, we chose the theme “rock-climbing on Omotesando” and developed a design that uses the mismatch between a rugged outdoor sport and Tokyo’s fashion district to its advantage. Instead of the usual rough and outdoorsy climbing wall, we came up with the idea of using interior design elements like picture frames, mirrors, deer heads, bird cages and flower vases to create a challenging wall with hard-to-find holds and unusual finger grips.”

When will the west take note, this is what indoor climbing should be about.

It would allow us to get that “kid” in us out. How many times have parents complained that their kids are climbing the walls? I think repelling from a chandelier would add a great finishing touch.
