See and Do (number two)

I wasn’t happy with this last illustration so I decided to put some more time into it for an update. I think I’m getting a bit closer to liking it now. Most of these illustrations take quite a bit of time and are worked over and over to get the right density of “scribbles” and to get the color and light working properly. I added the lightning bolt to the bottom, I’m not sure why, but in the past few illustrations, I’ve been able to use it, and am starting to like the symbolism that it carries. The “bolt” represents action, the spark of life, a catalyst that brings things to life. In this one, it is placed below the hand to add a bit of interest to the composition, but also to show that this power has been contained and is subject to the above symbol.

What do you use to build it up? I assume you work on black and build up the light – the effect is quite wonderful. The colours are so vivid.
